Basler Fasnacht – History and Origin
This event began as a form of Pre-Lenten celebrations, following the patterns of carnival traditions across Europe. Actually its difficult to pinpoint the exact origin of this festival but the people have been celebrating it in various forms for centuries and its roots deeply embedded in the city’s mediaeval traditions from the 14th century.
The festival as we know it today began to take place shape in the 19th century. In the early 1800s, the first organized parades featuring the now iconic ”Morgestraich” (the early morning procession) were introduced, marking a pivotal shift toward the modern-day celebration
By the time, the event evolved into a well established festival that is known for its detailed processions, elaborate costumes and satirical themes.

In these events people can see short ‘Raamestiggli’ (theatrical performances), ‘Schnitzelbangge’ (satirical verses) and performances with traditional carnival music.
